“Long NHS Wait for Adult Autism Diagnosis Raises Mental Health Concerns”

Being on an NHS waiting list for an autism diagnosis for over two years has left me uncertain about my condition. The waiting times for adult autism assessments vary by location, often exceeding the recommended three-month limit set by NICE guidelines. This prolonged wait not only causes stress but also deprives individuals of crucial support and interventions that come with a diagnosis, impacting their mental health.

For women, the challenges are even greater due to the underdiagnosis of autism in females. Systemic and unconscious sexism contribute to this disparity, as traits like social quietness or unique interests are often overlooked in women and girls. Women may also mask their traits to conform to societal norms, delaying the recognition of their condition until adulthood, leading to mental health struggles.

After reaching out to my GP in October 2023 to discuss potential autism and ADHD, I began the referral process, which took over a year to progress. Despite being on the waiting list, periodic updates do little to alleviate the daily struggles caused by undiagnosed symptoms, making life challenging.

Autism Awareness Day today prompts me to share my experience, highlighting the reality of living with masked symptoms for three decades. From struggles with eye contact to sensitivity to noise and social interactions, the impact of autism on daily life is profound. While coping mechanisms like earplugs help, the constant battle with sensory overload and social expectations takes a toll on mental well-being.

Despite the ongoing wait for a diagnosis, having official confirmation of my condition would provide validation, access to better support tools, and relieve the burden of uncertainty. As I continue to navigate this journey, I recognize the importance of raising awareness and advocating for individuals in similar limbo, all seeking validation and understanding.
