During an interview on 60 Minutes with Norah O’Donnell, Trump mentioned that he was escorted to safety slightly after the vice president, as Secret Service agents surrounded him and guided him to safety. Trump indicated that he wanted to assess the situation firsthand, despite video evidence showing him on the ground as the events unfolded.
He acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, mentioning it was different from typical noise in a ballroom. Video footage online captured the tense moments as guests sought cover under tables while Secret Service agents swiftly moved key officials out of the ballroom.
Trump acknowledged the delay caused by his actions, stating that he requested a brief pause to assess the situation before complying with the agents’ instructions to proceed cautiously. He confirmed that both he and the first lady were asked to stay low for safety measures.
Following the incident, it was revealed that Cole Allen, the individual who attempted to enter the ballroom with firearms and knives, had traveled across the country with intentions to target President Donald Trump and other high-ranking administration members. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche disclosed this information, stating that Allen was subdued during a confrontation that led to gunfire.
Authorities reported that Allen’s attempt to breach the Washington Hilton ballroom was met with resistance, resulting in a chaotic situation that led to shots being fired.
