Rachel Reeves has criticized the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, labeling it a misstep that has not enhanced global security. Speaking to CNBC during the International Monetary Fund (IMF) spring summit in Washington DC, Reeves expressed her belief that diplomatic efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons should have been pursued further instead of resorting to conflict.

Reeves emphasized the importance of pursuing desired changes through strategic means, regardless of personal feelings towards the Iranian regime. She specifically condemned the decision to halt diplomatic discussions and escalate the situation with military action, questioning the safety of the world post-conflict compared to the pre-war period.

The Chancellor, along with international partners, highlighted the devastating consequences of the Iran conflict, citing significant loss of life and economic instability on a global scale. The joint statement issued by Reeves and finance ministers from various countries underscored the lingering effects of the conflict, cautioning against further disruptions that could jeopardize energy security, supply chains, and economic stability.

Reeves also warned against hasty reactions to the economic challenges stemming from the war, emphasizing the need for targeted support for vulnerable populations. Despite ongoing discussions with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Reeves remained critical of the US-led military intervention in Iran, expressing concerns about the lack of a clear strategy and its impact on families and businesses in the UK and beyond.

While Bessent defended the economic consequences of the conflict, asserting that prices would eventually stabilize post-war, Reeves reiterated her stance on the imprudence of engaging in a military campaign without well-defined objectives and exit plans. The disparity in views between the two officials reflects broader debates on the efficacy and consequences of the US-Israeli intervention in Iran.

Mike Clancy, General Secretary of the Prospect trade union, echoed Reeves’ sentiments, denouncing the war as reckless and emphasizing the potential hardships faced by working-class individuals in the UK. Clancy called for fair treatment of public sector workers amidst rising costs of living, urging the government to prioritize equitable pay policies in light of the economic repercussions of the conflict.
