Revealing footage captured by a worker at UK testing facilities has exposed distressing scenes of animals in extreme agony, shedding light on the harsh reality of laboratory testing, according to activists. The footage, unprecedented in its scope, depicts various animals including beagles, primates, mini-pigs, rats, and rabbits enduring significant suffering. One particularly unsettling scene shows long-tailed macaques being fed new anti-obesity medication to evaluate its suitability for human use.
Additionally, the footage shows beagles wearing masks and inhaling test substances, rabbits being confined in tubes for IV testing, and terrified monkeys struggling in restraints. Mini-pigs can be seen squealing in terror as liquids are tested on fresh wounds on their backs, while rats are immobilized in tubes and forced to inhale test substances. Due to the distressing nature of the images, many have not been made public.
Animal Aid and Animals International collaborated after a former employee, who gathered the evidence, described feeling haunted by the animals’ cries during the lengthy trials. The footage prompted a call for the government to expedite its commitment to phasing out animal testing, with campaigners branding the footage as shocking and horrific. They emphasize the need for a shift towards human-relevant scientific methods to replace animal experimentation.
The footage has sparked a renewed debate on the use of animal testing, with calls for immediate action to end the suffering of animals in laboratories. While acknowledging the necessity of some testing for medical advancements, advocates stress the importance of exploring alternatives to reduce animal suffering. The government has reiterated its commitment to phasing out animal testing wherever possible and adopting proven alternatives, emphasizing stringent regulations and ongoing efforts to prioritize animal welfare in research practices.
