Dennis Taylor has shared a heartfelt tribute to the late snooker legend John Virgo. Virgo, a renowned figure in the world of snooker, passed away at the age of 79 earlier this month.
Virgo initially gained recognition as a player, clinching the 1979 UK Championship title, before transitioning into a successful broadcasting career. He became a beloved fixture on BBC’s snooker coverage and gained popularity for his involvement in the popular game show Big Break.
Taylor, a fellow snooker great who worked closely with Virgo, reminisced about their time together on various snooker programs, including witnessing Ronnie O’Sullivan’s record-breaking performance at the 1997 World Snooker Championship.
Virgo, known for his authoritative commentary spanning nearly four decades, tragically died on February 4 in Spain due to a ruptured aorta. Taylor honored his dear friend during the BBC’s coverage of the Welsh Open, reflecting on Virgo’s showmanship and charisma.
In Taylor’s words, “John Trevor Virgo was a true showman, commentator, and entertainer. Our paths crossed for over 50 years, sharing a passion for the sport and entertaining audiences with our banter and trick shots. John’s humor and impersonations were legendary, making us both sought-after entertainers in the snooker world.”
The snooker community mourns Virgo’s loss, with Taylor expressing his personal grief and fond memories of their time together. As a final tribute, Taylor fondly recalled their shared experiences, highlighting the joy and laughter they brought to fans of the game.
“Goodnight, JV.”
