North Lincolnshire Council has introduced a new scheme to relieve working-age households experiencing terminal illness from their council tax obligations. Families facing the loss of a loved one will have their council tax bills waived for a year, alleviating financial burdens during difficult times. The scheme, slated to operate for two years initially, aims to provide practical support to eligible households. Information on eligibility and application procedures can be found on the council’s website.

Similar initiatives are also being run by other councils like Barnet, Cheshire West, and Milton Keynes, following calls from the national charity Marie Curie for such actions. Meanwhile, the majority of councils in England are planning to hike council tax bills by 5%, with some councils granted permission for even higher increases.

The average annual council tax bill for a band D property now stands at £2,392. Cllr Rob Waltham, the leader of North Lincolnshire Council, emphasized the importance of supporting families during challenging times, ensuring they can focus on each other without financial concerns. Cllr Richard Hannigan highlighted the significant impact of the scheme on individuals facing terminal illness, providing them with space to prioritize care and family amidst emotional and financial challenges.

Cllr Tim Mitchell emphasized the council’s commitment to offering compassionate and practical assistance to residents in exceptional circumstances. If individuals suspect they are in a higher council tax band than necessary, they can challenge it to potentially receive refunds and lower future bills. It is crucial to conduct thorough research before challenging a council tax band, as miscalculations can lead to increased bills and affect neighbors. Various circumstances, such as living alone or being on a low income, may qualify individuals for council tax discounts or support schemes, potentially reducing bills by up to 100% depending on eligibility criteria.
