A dedicated ultra-marathon runner, David Parrish, tragically passed away during a challenging 234-mile endeavor in the rugged Scottish Highlands just weeks before his upcoming wedding. The 35-year-old from Dumfries was discovered deceased in a remote mountainous region of Kintail late last Saturday while undertaking the formidable Cape Wrath Trail pursuit.
Parrish, a former Royal Marine, had been actively preparing to achieve the fastest male completion time for the arduous route spanning from Fort William to the northernmost part of Scotland, renowned as one of the most demanding endurance tests in the UK. His fiancée, Jade Lau, shared that they were in the midst of wedding preparations, including creating playlists and crafting speeches for their special day.
Despite the absence of details regarding the cause of his death, authorities confirmed no foul play was suspected. Parrish and Lau, who resided in Glasgow, were set to tie the knot in a mere three weeks, as reported by the BBC. Lau fondly described her late partner as vibrant, humorous, and affectionate, highlighting his enthusiasm leading up to the running event.
The couple, who enjoyed exploring the Highlands together with their dog, Munro, shared a passion for hiking and mountain running. Parrish had previously proposed to Lau during a stroll in Glencoe and had previously triumphed in the 2023 Cape Wrath Trail, securing victory and achieving the second-best recorded time.
Reflecting on her late fiancée’s pursuits, Lau expressed a blend of caution and pride, acknowledging his remarkable spirit and capabilities in facing challenges. Parrish’s dedication to the run this year was also a heartfelt tribute to his late comrade, Luke Ireland, a fellow Royal Marine who tragically perished during a mountain run in 2014.
The fundraiser initiated by Parrish to support Scottish Mountain Rescue in memory of Ireland has garnered nearly £40,000 in donations, with the running community and others showering tributes on the departed athlete. Remembered for his remarkable achievements and humble demeanor, Parrish leaves behind a legacy of strength and positivity that will be dearly missed by his acquaintances and admirers.
