Neighbors living near Axel Rudakubana in Southport have shared their accounts of hearing disturbing noises like screaming, shouting, and objects being thrown and broken coming from his residence. They also described the unsettling demeanor of the troubled teenager, noting his eerie gaze when encountered outside.

Recently, a public inquiry highlighted the parental failures of Rudakubana’s mother and father, Alphonse Rudakubana and Laetitia Muzayire, emphasizing their negligence in addressing their son’s concerning behavior and dangerous interests in violence. The inquiry chairman strongly criticized them for their abandonment of responsibility despite being aware of the risks posed by their son.

On a tragic day in July 2024, at the age of 17, Rudakubana carried out a violent attack at a children’s dance class, resulting in the deaths of three young girls and injuries to several others. The neighbor revealed how the once harmonious family slowly lost control over their son, with visible changes in his behavior and the deteriorating condition of their home.

Sir Adrian Fulford condemned Rudakubana’s parents for their moral failure and failure to alert authorities about their son’s escalating aggression and possession of deadly weapons. The report highlighted critical moments where the parents could have intervened but chose not to act, ultimately leading to the devastating incident.

Since the tragic event, Rudakubana’s parents have been relocated to a undisclosed location at public expense. The inquiry underscored multiple systemic failures across various agencies that could have prevented the attack, including deficiencies in risk management, information sharing, understanding of autism, online monitoring, and parental responsibilities.

Legal representatives for the bereaved families have called for a legal framework to hold parents accountable for their children’s actions in cases of extreme violence. The upcoming phase of the inquiry aims to explore strategies for identifying and managing risks associated with individuals fixated on extreme violence.

Rudakubana, now 19, received a minimum prison sentence of 52 years after pleading guilty to the murders. The community awaits further insights from the ongoing inquiry to address the complexities surrounding this tragic incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
