Golfer David McDonald, an 85-year-old resident of Fall River, N.S., achieved a remarkable feat by shooting an even-par 72 at the challenging Ashburn Golf Club’s new course. This achievement was particularly special for McDonald, who usually plays from the silver tees, covering nearly 5,800 yards. Shooting one’s age in golf is considered a significant accomplishment, and McDonald surpassed this milestone by an impressive 13 strokes.

McDonald, who maintains a rigorous golfing routine of three to four times a week, emphasized the importance of staying active. Despite facing heart issues in the past, he remains physically fit and determined not to slow down anytime soon. His friend, Peter Stirling, commended McDonald’s dedication to fitness and noted his preference for walking the course whenever possible.

During a recent round with CBC News, McDonald showcased his consistency and skill, demonstrating precision drives and clutch putts that contribute to his typical high 70s scores. Reflecting on his golf journey, McDonald shared how he discovered his passion for the sport at the age of 30 while serving in the air force. Over the years, he garnered multiple national titles and earned a place in the Cape Breton Sport Hall of Fame in 2005.

McDonald’s pursuit of his 18th hole-in-one, coupled with his healthy lifestyle choices, highlights his commitment to longevity and staying active through the game he loves. His enduring enthusiasm for golf serves as an inspiration to fellow players, underscoring the positive impact of regular exercise and engaging in activities that bring joy and camaraderie.
