An 11-year-old boy tragically passed away after attempting to cross the road to reach his mother and getting struck by oncoming traffic. The incident occurred on Nottingham Road in Chaddesden, Derby, on April 17. Seth Fulton was cycling on the sidewalk when he spotted his mother on the opposite side and made the fateful decision to cross.
As he tried to make his way across, he was hit by a bus, which then propelled him into the path of a VW Polo. Despite being rushed to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, Seth succumbed to his injuries later that same day.
Following an inquest conducted by Susan Evans, the coroner for Derby and Derbyshire, it was determined that Seth’s attempt to cross the road was unsafe. The coroner emphasized that neither the driver of the VW Polo nor the bus had adequate time to prevent the collision.
The official cause of Seth’s death was determined to be a traumatic head injury resulting from a road traffic collision. The inquest report detailed the sequence of events leading to the tragic accident and highlighted the lack of opportunity for the drivers to avoid the collision.
In a statement issued by Derbyshire Police after the incident, Seth’s parents fondly described him as a vibrant and adventurous young boy who cherished wildlife and had a zest for life. They reflected on his caring and sociable nature, his love for skateboarding and BMX riding, and his infectious sense of humor that touched the lives of all who knew him.
Seth was remembered as a beloved son, brother, grandson, and nephew, whose vibrant personality and loving spirit left a lasting impact on those around him.
