A woman, aged 57, recently shared how she received a life-changing diagnosis many years after wearing her father’s coat, unknowingly covered in asbestos dust from his work on construction sites. Heather Von St James reminisced about her childhood when she would wear her father’s dust-laden jacket to feed her pet rabbits outdoors. Little did she know that the seemingly harmless blue satin coat, infused with her dad’s aftershave scent, would later lead to health complications.
Heather, residing in Minnesota, US, encountered health issues at 36 while pregnant for the first time. Initially attributing her symptoms to postpartum effects, she continued working as a hairdresser and business owner despite feeling constant fatigue and experiencing severe fevers resembling a heavy weight on her chest. Concerned by her deteriorating health, a CT scan eventually unveiled a tumor near her lung, and within a short span, doctors diagnosed her with pleural mesothelioma, a severe lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure.
Faced with a grim prognosis of around 15 months to live without aggressive treatment, Heather refused to accept this fate and opted for a rigorous therapeutic journey. Undergoing extensive surgery that included the removal of a rib, lung, affected tissues, and subsequent treatments like heated chemotherapy, she battled the disease with determination. Despite the physical challenges of living with one lung, Heather emerged victorious over cancer and embarked on a new path as a patient advocate, traveling globally to raise awareness about asbestos-related illnesses and supporting newly diagnosed individuals.
