A massive wildfire that forced the closure of a key road connecting two major cities in the UK has been successfully contained by firefighters. The A47 Snake Pass, a vital route linking Sheffield and Manchester, was temporarily shut down between Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir due to heavy smoke spreading from a significant fire in the Peak District.

Derbyshire firefighters received reports of the blaze late on Thursday night, and subsequent videos revealed extensive moorland spanning 900,000 square meters engulfed in flames. To combat the fire, crews from Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire were deployed, along with support from the Peak District Fire Operations Group, local land stewards, and the Derby Mountain Rescue team.

Recent updates from the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue service have confirmed that the wildfire is now contained, allowing the reopened road to resume normal traffic flow. Residents are advised not to be alarmed if they observe smoke or small flames in the vicinity but are urged to keep windows and doors closed as a precautionary measure.

Firefighting teams will remain on-site to monitor the situation closely. According to a statement from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, collaborative efforts with the Fire Operations Group and Derby Mountain Rescue have been crucial in controlling the fire at Snake Pass Summit. The affected area will continue to be under surveillance throughout the night.

In related news, experts have identified High Peak, covering a significant area of the Peak District National Park, as the most susceptible parliamentary constituency in the UK to wildfires. Recent incidents, including two major wildfires near Ladybower Reservoir within a 48-hour span, have prompted park authorities to remind visitors about fire safety measures and responsible waste disposal practices.

The Moorland Association highlighted the severity of the wildfire risk in High Peak, emphasizing the urgent need to address the escalating crisis. Concurrently, the National Gamekeepers’ Organisation raised the wildfire risk index to red for all moorland regions in England and Wales due to the prevailing dry weather conditions.
