In the early hours of each day, Dina Njati embarks on a challenging eight-hour routine to secure water for her family. The 37-year-old makes multiple trips down a steep hillside to fetch water from a small, contaminated pond, carrying a heavy 20-liter container on her head. This daily ordeal is a necessity as the only water source in Mkambabisi, Malawi, often leaves Dina and her daughter ill due to its contamination.

The situation in Malawi is dire, with one in three people lacking access to clean water and over half the population without proper sanitation facilities. However, hope is on the horizon as a new borehole, funded by the Wimbledon Foundation and implemented by WaterAid, is set to revolutionize life in Dina’s village by providing clean water nearby.

This transformation will not only alleviate Dina’s daily struggles but also enable her to resume her carpentry career, which she had to give up to care for her grandfather. With clean water, Dina envisions a brighter future for her daughter, free from the hardships she has endured.

Unsafe water poses significant risks, especially in maternity clinics like Kangolwa Centre, where the lack of clean water can lead to life-threatening infections for mothers and newborns. The installation of clean water sources at the clinic has transformed the birthing experience for women like Eliza and Trinity, ensuring a safer and more dignified process.

The impact of clean water goes beyond health, shaping entire futures. For instance, Elshaday’s access to clean water has allowed her to focus on her education, leading to opportunities like attending college to become a nurse. Conversely, Lydia’s daily struggle for water has hindered her academic progress, emphasizing the importance of clean water access for a brighter future.

WaterAid’s efforts to bring clean water to communities in Malawi are crucial in improving health outcomes, empowering individuals, and fostering sustainable development. By providing clean, accessible water, organizations like WaterAid are not just changing lives but also offering hope and potential for a better tomorrow.
