Hundreds of mourners in Iran gathered for the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressing their desire for “revenge” following his death in an airstrike. The funeral, held on the same day as America’s celebration of the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary, witnessed emotional scenes in Tehran with chants of “Death to America!”

Despite the coincidence in timing, the ceremony honoring Khamenei, who ruled Iran for decades, served as a platform for solidarity and support for the nation’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. The event took place amidst ongoing negotiations between Washington DC and Tehran, with concerns looming over the possibility of Israel launching further attacks that could disrupt the talks.

Mourners at the funeral paid their respects to Khamenei and his deceased family members, killed in the same airstrike, with expressions of grief and calls for retribution echoing through the crowd. The ceremony featured symbolic elements resembling Khamenei’s past speeches, creating a poignant atmosphere reminiscent of his leadership.

The passing of Khamenei marked a significant moment for Iran, only the second time the country has mourned the loss of a supreme leader since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. The funeral procession, with Khamenei’s turban symbolizing his lineage to the Prophet Muhammad, included the caskets of his family members, highlighting the personal toll of the tragedy.

Mourner Ali Kazemi, who traveled from Tabriz to attend the funeral, emphasized the collective commitment to defending their country and religion. Meanwhile, amidst the somber occasion, some mourners in the crowd displayed a banner with the message “#KillTrump,” reflecting ongoing tensions with the United States.

As the funeral unfolded, Iran’s chief negotiator criticized a joint statement from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron regarding military readiness in the region. The ceremony served as a solemn yet resonant moment for Iran, honoring the legacy of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and signaling a new chapter under the leadership of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
