Andy Burnham has not ruled out the possibility of implementing a wealth tax if he becomes the Prime Minister next week. The Makerfield MP emphasized the need for a fairer system and suggested that individuals might be required to contribute more through taxes.
Previously, as the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, Burnham has shown interest in increasing taxes on landlords who keep high street properties vacant and on large companies like Amazon with warehouses. In an interview with Gary Lineker for Goalhanger, he mentioned the importance of assessing the financial situation thoroughly before making decisions.
While Burnham highlighted the necessity of fairness in taxation, he also emphasized the importance of unity and avoiding division among the public. He acknowledged that tough decisions lie ahead regarding financial matters but stressed the need to approach them with careful consideration and without creating further divides.
As discussions continue on who will serve as Chancellor in Burnham’s potential government, names like Ed Miliband, Shabana Mahmood, and John Healey have been linked to the role. Despite committing to not increasing income tax, national insurance, or VAT based on Labour’s manifesto, Burnham had previously advocated for considering a wealth tax, pointing out the long-overdue revaluation of council tax.
Additionally, Burnham expressed willingness to challenge Donald Trump on certain issues while maintaining respect for the office and the UK-US relationship. He emphasized the importance of being genuine and addressing disagreements with Trump directly yet diplomatically.
