Mac McLaren, a veteran from the 1st Battalion Royal Highland Fusiliers, shared his harrowing experience post-Iraq War. He recounted a moment of despair when he contemplated ending his life but was saved by an unexpected notification offering him a flat. McLaren, who suffered a severe leg injury during his service, eventually decided to speak out to raise awareness about the support available through organizations like the Royal British Legion and The Stoll Foundation.
McLaren, among 1500 veterans and families, gathered to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Iraq War at the National Memorial Arboretum. The event also honored the sacrifices made, including the loss of 179 British armed forces personnel and injuries to over 6,000 individuals during the conflict.
The day marked a poignant moment for families like that of Lieutenant Commander Darren Chapman, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash during the war. His widow, Liz Chapman, and their children visited the Basra Memorial Wall to pay tribute to Darren, symbolizing one of the many heartfelt stories echoing the lasting impact of the Iraq War.
The event also saw the presence of Nick Spicer, one of the final British soldiers to depart Iraq, reflecting on his experiences during the war. Spicer, a Major from the 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, recalled the challenges and memorable moments of his service, encapsulating the sentiment of “First in, last out” that defined their mission.
