The United States is set to reduce its military support to NATO, impacting access to American military assets such as warships, fighter jets, drones, and aircraft. This decision, which has surprised European diplomats, follows previous warnings from the US regarding decreased military aid to Europe during the current administration.

Despite assurances from US envoy Alexander Velez-Green that nuclear deterrence support to NATO member states will continue, European nations are urged to quickly address any capability gaps in their defense arsenals left by the reduction in US military contributions.

The move by the US comes after President Trump’s recent social media outburst criticizing NATO allies for their reluctance to join efforts against Iran. Trump’s online post accused these allies of being cowardly and highlighted the importance of US involvement in maintaining NATO’s strength.

This development underscores a shift in US military policy towards NATO and may have lasting implications for transatlantic security cooperation.
