A teenager tragically lost his life in a drink-driving accident after being served lager at a pub despite being underage. Anthony Wiazcek, the pub landlord, provided Hector Eccles, 16, with five pints of beer, knowing he was not of legal drinking age. Hector, a young farmer, subsequently crashed a quad bike into a field with a friend, leading to his death despite efforts by paramedics.
Wiazcek, the sole person responsible for serving alcohol that night, was found guilty of selling alcohol to a minor and was fined £660. Additionally, his personal alcohol license was revoked for three months. The court heard that Wiazcek had a prior relationship with Hector and was aware of his age when serving him at the Roggerham Gate pub in Lancashire.
Following a trial, Wiazcek was convicted of the offense and ordered to pay a fine, a victim surcharge, and prosecution costs. Hector’s mother expressed deep sorrow in a statement, lamenting the loss of her son’s life and the impact on their family. The emotional toll was described as overwhelming, with Hector’s absence felt keenly in everyday moments and milestones.
The licensing sergeant for the area commended the trial’s outcome, emphasizing the importance of responsible alcohol sales to prevent such tragic incidents. Authorities pledged to work closely with licensed establishments to ensure adherence to regulations and take decisive action against any breaches.
