Passengers aboard the MV Hondius have shared insights into the current situation inside the ship, showcasing desolate decks and deserted dining areas.

Unlike typical cruise ships, the MV Hondius is a compact polar exploration vessel, specializing in Arctic and Antarctic expeditions featuring birdwatching, kayaking, and hiking experiences.

Stranded off Cape Verde’s coast, the vessel is now a far cry from the anticipated natural adventures, with most of the 147 passengers confined to their cabins due to a hantavirus outbreak that has led to three fatalities. The ship, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, was en route from Argentina on a 46-day Antarctic voyage.

Investigations by Argentine authorities suggest a possible connection between the outbreak and a birdwatching trip by a Dutch couple in Ushuaia before boarding the ship.

Designed in 2019, the MV Hondius caters to nature enthusiasts, offering various outdoor activities such as daily Zodiac excursions, birdwatching, kayaking, and hiking expeditions led by expert biologists and geologists.

Passengers are advised to pack casual and comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor activities, emphasizing the need for layers due to extended walks each day. The ship is equipped with inflatable Zodiac boats for shore exploration.

While the age range of passengers varies, most fall between 45 and 65 years old, characterized as independent travelers with a keen interest in exploring remote regions.

Accommodating up to 170 passengers, the ship offers a range of cabins, including suites, deluxe cabins, and porthole cabins.

Feedback from travelers highlights the crew’s camaraderie, with many describing the experience as once-in-a-lifetime, citing abundant wildlife sightings and breathtaking scenery.

Despite positive reviews, some passengers have expressed disappointment over the lack of basic amenities, particularly for elderly guests or those with mobility challenges.

Currently, the ship presents a stark contrast to its usual active atmosphere, with deserted dining areas and empty decks, as passengers await updates in their cabins.

Amid the crisis, passengers like Jake Rosmarin have shared emotional accounts, emphasizing the uncertainty and desire for safety and clarity.

Passenger morale remains high, with individuals like Qasem Elhato keeping busy with activities like reading, watching movies, and enjoying hot drinks.

As the situation unfolds, precautionary measures are in place, including isolation, hygiene protocols, and medical monitoring, with support provided to all passengers.

The evolving circumstances have prompted discussions on the ship’s future docking, with various stakeholders involved in finding a resolution that prioritizes public health and safety.

The unfolding events aboard the MV Hondius serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by passengers and the intricate coordination required for a safe and organized response to the crisis.
