Keir Starmer has intensified the pressure on Israel to halt its attacks on Lebanon, citing an impending crisis in the country. The Prime Minister emphasized the precarious situation in the Middle East, highlighting the fragility of the ceasefire involving the US, Israel, and Iran. He reiterated the urgent need for Lebanon to be included in the ceasefire agreement.

Additionally, Starmer rebuked Donald Trump’s actions regarding the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, stating the UK’s stance on keeping the vital shipping route open. He emphasized that the UK does not endorse the blockade and is adamant about not being drawn into the conflict with Iran.

During a lengthy address in Parliament, the PM stressed the importance of dealing with global challenges calmly but with resolve. He condemned Iran’s exploitation of the Strait during the conflict and emphasized the necessity of restoring freedom of navigation in the region.

Regarding the ceasefire, Starmer underscored the need for diplomatic efforts and urged for Lebanon’s prompt inclusion in the agreement. He called for Hezbollah to disarm while criticizing Israel’s airstrikes for their severe humanitarian impact on Lebanon.

In contrast to Trump’s aggressive rhetoric, Starmer’s approach was seen as composed and diplomatic. The UK, along with France, is set to co-host a summit to facilitate international efforts toward resolving the conflict and reopening the vital shipping lane.

The escalating tensions in the region have led to a spike in gas prices, affecting global economies. The Resolution Foundation warned that the conflict could result in UK households facing financial losses. MPs questioned Starmer on the UK’s efforts to de-escalate the situation, particularly in Lebanon, amid growing concerns about the crisis.

The UK remains focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring full freedom of navigation without conditions or tolls. Talks involving Lebanese, Israeli, and US officials are planned in Washington to address the confusion surrounding Lebanon’s inclusion in the ceasefire agreement.

Elsewhere, Starmer assured that the UK’s defense investment plan is nearing completion after delays. He emphasized the importance of developing a robust plan for the future defense and security of the country.

Deputy PM David Lammy and other officials have engaged in diplomatic efforts in the US to address the Middle East crisis and its economic impact. The UK government remains committed to diplomatic solutions and restoring stability in the region.
