A Jewish primary school’s leaders have initiated a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to collect funds for additional security measures. The school has enlisted former elite soldiers, including ex-paratroopers, to bolster their protection teams. Security measures have been heightened at all Jewish schools and synagogues nationwide, especially in the North London area, amidst concerns about potential anti-semitic attacks orchestrated by a shadowy organization linked to Iran known as HAYI.
Following recent security incidents, former Royal Marines and veterans from the Parachute Regiment have been recruited to enhance security measures. Notably, a tennis club with a significant Jewish membership has hired a former special services operative to safeguard its members. The decision to deploy former elite troops was prompted by a series of attacks, including the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green and multiple fire bombings.
The Alma school’s fundraising efforts have been remarkably successful, with 320 donations amounting to £43,000 out of the £50,000 target. Expressing concern over the safety of children, Sam Bianco, co-chair of Friends of Alma, emphasized the importance of additional security measures to “future-proof” the school. While acknowledging the current security protocols as robust, the school seeks to upgrade its CCTV, fencing, and overall physical security infrastructure to align with evolving threats.
Amidst the fundraising campaign, the school aims to bridge a financial gap of approximately £50,000 to implement necessary security upgrades. The Community Security Trust has pledged partial funding support, but the school relies on the broader Jewish community to reach its fundraising goal within a week. The urgency of the situation reflects the community’s solidarity and commitment to ensuring the safety of its members.
In light of escalating security concerns, the recruitment of former marines and Parachute Regiment members underscores the gravity of the situation. While traditional security measures relied on volunteers or ordinary guards, the Community Security Trust has collaborated with a private contractor staffed by individuals with military backgrounds, including elite units from the Royal Navy and army.
Recent developments, including the government elevating the terrorism threat level and heightened surveillance on Jewish and Israeli entities, point to an imminent security risk. Investigations into the Islamic Movement of the People of the Right Hand (Hayi) for potential terror links have intensified, with a focus on individuals involved in recent attacks. The ongoing security measures reflect a proactive approach to safeguarding the Jewish community amidst evolving threats.
