The UK may experience rain and thunderstorms in the upcoming week, marking a shift from the dry summer weather the country has been enjoying, according to the Met Office. In 2026, the nation has already faced four heatwaves and drought conditions in various regions since July, with low rainfall exacerbating the situation. However, a change is expected as showers are forecasted to bring relief next week.
A low-pressure system is anticipated to spread across the country starting Monday, potentially causing rain and thunderstorms in certain areas. Heavy rain is likely in the north, while lighter showers are expected in the south. Despite the rain, warm and humid weather is forecasted to return to parts of England and Wales, with temperatures possibly exceeding 30°C.
Met Office’s Chief Forecaster, Chris Bulmer, mentioned a shift in weather patterns next week, bringing back warmer conditions alongside showers or thunderstorms. While some southern regions may receive minimal rainfall, the north could experience heavier downpours, especially in parts of Scotland.
Recent data shows that some areas in England received less than 1mm of rainfall throughout July, leading to half of England and the entirety of Wales being declared in drought. Seven areas in England, including the Thames Valley and London, have faced multiple droughts in recent years.
Helen Wakeham, Director of Water at the Environment Agency, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that the prolonged hot and dry weather has led to water depletion surpassing natural replenishment rates. This situation poses significant risks to the environment, wildlife, and the economy, highlighting the critical need for water conservation efforts.
