A recent interception in the UK has thwarted the smuggling of 25 inflatable boats and engines capable of transporting up to 2,000 individuals across the Channel. Border security authorities in the UK seized a container at Felixstowe destined for Germany, containing 10-meter long boats that could each carry about 80 passengers on the dangerous journey. This marks the first large-scale confiscation of boats and engines in the UK, with the container intended for Hamburg, a known hub for human trafficking operations.

The confiscated items were set to be transported to northern France or Belgium to facilitate risky Channel crossings. The UK government has committed to dismantling the criminal networks responsible for facilitating the arrival of small boats on British shores. The National Crime Agency (NCA) and international partners have intercepted over 1,500 boats and engines since 2023 as part of a continuous effort to combat criminal activities.

Border Security Commander Duncan Capps commended the operation, emphasizing the significant blow dealt to criminal groups enabling perilous Channel crossings. Capps highlighted the collaborative efforts of the NCA, Home Office intelligence teams, and Border Force officers in disrupting criminal networks and their supply chains. Those involved in smuggling such equipment will face legal consequences, as stated by NCA Branch Commander Adam Berry, who emphasized the impact of the seizure on criminal profits and the prevention of life-threatening situations in the Channel.

The interception effectively halted the potential use of these hazardous boats and engines, showcasing the commitment to targeting the supply lines of people-smuggling gangs. The investigation remains ongoing, with a focus on disrupting illicit activities. Notably, there is no indication that the ship’s crew or operators were aware of the container’s contents. The Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Act, introduced last year, introduced new criminal offenses related to organized immigration crime.
