Andy Burnham has assured that the UK stands firmly by Ukraine, pledging full support during his initial official meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of his meeting with Mr. Zelensky, highlighting that the Ukrainian President was the first leader he welcomed since assuming office. Burnham reiterated that Britain’s commitment to Ukraine remains unwavering under his leadership, expressing personal dedication to upholding all obligations made to Ukraine.
Addressing Mr. Zelensky directly, Burnham stated, “I want you to know that we are fully behind Ukraine. You can rely on me and the UK for as long as necessary.” In response, Mr. Zelensky expressed gratitude for the strengthened relationship with the UK and appreciated Burnham’s focus on defense and security cooperation.
The Prime Minister moved swiftly to address concerns in Kyiv regarding the change in leadership in the UK, assuring Mr. Zelensky that the support for Ukraine remains steadfast across British political parties. Burnham assured that the British government recognizes the challenges faced by Ukraine and empathizes with their struggles.
Following the meeting, Burnham described the interaction as positive and expressed his intention to visit Ukraine soon to further strengthen the partnership and address the issues raised by President Zelensky.
During the visit, the leaders engaged with over 200 Ukrainian military personnel participating in Exercise Sea Breeze, a maritime security exercise in preparation for future operations in the Black Sea. Additionally, a pact was announced to enable Ukraine to commence large-scale production of UK-designed signal jammers, known as the “Stone Cloak” system, aimed at disrupting Russian air defenses.
