Members of Parliament, including a former Labour chair, are calling for the UK to adopt stringent new laws to address extremism, taking cues from Australia’s approach. The government is being urged to examine Australia’s response to the tragic Bondi beach attack that claimed 15 lives in December, which includes introducing harsher penalties for hate speech, promoting violence, and online harassment.

A report from the all-party group (APPG) on counter extremism emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to combat dangerous radicals who are currently operating freely. The report stressed the importance of engaging local communities and proposed cracking down on ‘lawful but harmful’ content that platforms are monetizing, citing concerns from the Southport Inquiry into a violent incident involving a teenager named Axel Rudakubana.

MPs are advocating for the establishment of a specialized unit within the Cabinet Office to coordinate efforts against extremism across various government departments. Anneliese Dodds, the vice-chair of the group, highlighted the challenges posed by extremism, disinformation, and declining trust in institutions, emphasizing the necessity for evidence-based policymaking to uphold democratic values.

The APPG report urged the government to treat homegrown extremists with the same severity as foreign threats, underscoring the need for stronger measures beyond those outlined in the King’s Speech. It also criticized the current counter-extremism plans for lacking initiatives to counter dangerous narratives and conspiracy theories, stressing the role of empowering local communities in fostering resilience.

Furthermore, the report highlighted the inadequacy of the Online Safety Act in addressing harmful extremist content and called for enhanced focus on social cohesion and policies to address AI-enabled extremism. Collaboration with international partners was also deemed crucial in the fight against extremism.

Labour MP Damien Egan, who leads the group, emphasized the evolving nature of extremism fueled by disinformation, online radicalization, and other factors, calling for a comprehensive response that transcends party lines and involves all segments of society.

The Home Office has been approached for comment.
