Bridget Phillipson urges schools to incorporate water safety education into their curriculum ahead of the summer break, expressing concerns over the potential increase in child fatalities. The Education Secretary commended the Mirror’s impactful Save Lives for Sam initiative, which was launched in response to a distressing spike in water-related deaths during a recent heatwave.

A high-level meeting, including government officials, addressed various issues related to the heatwave, with a specific focus on water safety. Starting in September, schools will be required to incorporate water safety education into Relationships and Sex and Health Education (RSHE) lessons, emphasizing the importance of recognizing risks and staying safe around water.

In light of recent tragic incidents, Ms. Phillipson emphasizes the urgency of educating children on water safety before the summer holidays, highlighting the critical need for awareness and prevention measures. She encourages educators to promptly share relevant resources and lesson plans with students and families to ensure preparedness.

The Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam campaign has garnered support from prominent figures like Keir Starmer, who pledged government backing at the G7 summit. Named after the late Sam Haycock, the campaign aims to promote water safety practices among youth, emphasizing the significance of vigilance and precautionary measures near water bodies.

The water safety code, soon to be part of the national school curriculum, advocates for a cautious approach before entering water, stressing the importance of assessing risks and staying accompanied by others. In emergencies, individuals are advised to call emergency services and follow specific guidelines to ensure their safety.

Government officials, such as Chief Secretary Darren Jones, underscore the importance of disseminating water safety advice, especially during hot weather conditions. Efforts are underway to collaborate with various organizations and authorities to enhance safety measures and prevent water-related incidents.

The Mirror’s initiative calls for national attention to drowning prevention, urging the government to launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign before the summer holidays. Recommendations include avoiding risky behavior like diving into water and educating the public on cold water shock. Additionally, there are calls for the implementation of ‘Sam’s Law’ to mandate safety equipment around high-risk water bodies.
