A man from the UK passed away in Fuerteventura following a dramatic helicopter rescue from the sea. The incident occurred at Playa del Águila, also known as Playa de La Escalera, in the La Oliva municipality of the north Canary Islands. Emergency services responded to a distress call about two individuals struggling in the water off the beach on Thursday around 5:30 pm.
Rescuers from the Canary Islands Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) located the man using a helicopter. After being airlifted, the man was found to be in cardiac arrest. Rescuers immediately initiated CPR while transporting him to a nearby landing site. Despite efforts by paramedics, a medical helicopter crew, and local health center staff to revive him on the ground, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second swimmer was able to self-extricate from the water and received treatment on the beach from paramedics. The individual declined hospitalization after receiving initial care at the scene, as reported by the Canary Islands Government’s 112 Emergency Service.
The rescue operation involved lifeguards from La Oliva beach service, maritime rescue teams, Civil Protection volunteers, local police, and firefighters. An investigation has been launched by the Civil Guard, who are preparing an official report on the incident.
Playa del Águila is a remote beach on Fuerteventura’s rugged northwest coast, situated approximately three miles south of El Cotillo. Known for its natural beauty, the beach boasts golden sands, turquoise waters, and striking volcanic cliffs. Accessible only by a steep 130-step staircase called La Escalera, the beach disappears entirely during high tide. It lacks lifeguards, amenities, or commercial services.
