US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Iran amidst ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The conflict escalated with Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of at least 47 individuals, including two children, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency. In a retaliatory move, Hezbollah reportedly targeted an Israeli tank, resulting in the death of four Israeli soldiers.
Iran reacted by closing the vital Strait of Hormuz, citing ceasefire violations by the US and Israel. The country threatened further action if hostilities persist. President Trump, in a social media post, demanded that Iran rein in Hezbollah’s disruptive activities in Lebanon, cautioning of severe consequences if not heeded.
Following a temporary peace agreement between the US and Iran, shipping activities resumed in the strait, a critical route for global oil and gas transport. US Vice-President JD Vance and Iranian officials are currently in Switzerland for discussions on Iran’s nuclear program and the ceasefire arrangement.
While negotiations continue, uncertainty looms as Israel and Hezbollah, not party to the agreement, remain engaged in clashes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed the presence of Israeli forces in southern Lebanon until threats are neutralized. Hezbollah reported Israeli attacks and vowed to defend against further assaults.
Amidst the diplomatic efforts, both sides are evaluating the potential for lasting peace in the region. The situation remains tense as sporadic violations of the ceasefire persist, underscoring the fragility of the current truce.
