A tragic incident occurred at Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co in Longview, Washington state, where a worker lost their life and nine others are currently missing following the collapse of a massive chemical tank holding nearly a million gallons of a highly corrosive substance. Despite recovery efforts, authorities have expressed little hope of finding the missing individuals alive. The cause of the tank implosion remains unknown.

Cowlitz Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein stated during a news conference that the primary focus is on stabilizing the collapsed tank, which still contains approximately 90,000 gallons of a chemical mixture referred to as “white liquor,” before initiating search operations for the missing individuals. The injuries sustained by those involved range from minor to critical, with some suffering burns or respiratory issues, including a firefighter who was part of the response team.

Due to the risk of further leaks and potential collapse of the tank, emergency responders will only work during daylight hours. The community remains on edge, with friends and family members anxiously awaiting updates on their loved ones who worked at the facility. The tragic incident has left many families in distress and seeking answers.

The Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. facility, a prominent pulp and paper manufacturing plant, has been a key part of the Longview community since the 1950s. The plant, which produces various paper and packaging materials, employs around 1,000 workers and is situated in an industrial area shared with other businesses in the timber, paper, and chemical sectors.

The chemical involved in the tank collapse, known as “white liquor,” primarily consists of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide and is utilized in the paper production process. Following the rupture of the tank, the white liquor spilled into a drainage ditch, prompting an evaluation by the state Ecology Department to assess environmental impacts.

Despite earlier safety complaints lodged against Nippon Dynawave, authorities clarified that these issues were unrelated to the recent incident and remain under investigation. The company, a subsidiary of Japan-based Nippon Paper Group, has faced fines for health and safety violations earlier this year. As the community seeks answers and support, the authorities and relevant agencies are committed to providing transparency and ensuring accountability in the aftermath of this tragic event.
