A mother of two tragically ended her life using a self-proclaimed ‘suicide kit’ that was delivered to her residence by Royal Mail, a recent inquest revealed.

Jane Colechin, a 44-year-old charity worker, was known for her loving nature and sharp intellect but was secretly battling severe anxiety. Her struggles intensified when a project she oversaw lost its funding, leading her to seek out a lethal substance online. She had the substance delivered to her home in Forest Gate, east London, where she lived with her partner, Sean Gleeson, and their twin sons.

Detective Constable Sam Drury from the Metropolitan Police disclosed that they were investigating Colechin’s death in connection to the substance, which had been linked to the deaths of at least five individuals who purchased it online. Colechin had extensively researched the substance online and even tracked a Royal Mail parcel containing it.

Gleeson, who had been away for New Year’s Eve, returned home on January 1 to find his partner missing. After a frantic search, he discovered Colechin’s lifeless body in the basement. Despite calling for emergency assistance, it was too late to save her.

A toxicology report revealed an alarmingly high level of the chemical in Colechin’s system, far exceeding safe limits.

Colechin, who held a doctorate in political science and served as a director at the Youth Futures Foundation, had a history of mental health struggles exacerbated by the birth of her twin sons in 2017. Despite seeking medical help and being prescribed medication, her condition deteriorated over time.

The inquest highlighted missed opportunities for intervention, including failed attempts to access timely mental health support. Coroner Nadia Persaud suggested that had Colechin received urgent care on a specific date, her tragic outcome might have been averted.

In the aftermath of Colechin’s passing, friends rallied to support Gleeson, raising funds to assist him. Colleagues and loved ones mourned the loss of a remarkable individual, emphasizing the profound impact Colechin had on their lives.

The coroner ruled Colechin’s death as suicide resulting from the ingestion of the chemical, extending condolences to her family and acknowledging Gleeson’s unwavering support throughout the ordeal.

Royal Mail expressed deep regret over the incident, emphasizing their legal obligation not to open packages. They assured cooperation with law enforcement and other agencies to identify and report suspicious items.
