A young woman described as “vulnerable” tragically ended her life following allegations of workplace sexual assault, as revealed in a recent inquest.
The family of Lauren Hewson, who made an initial suicide attempt on her 18th birthday, expressed frustration over the closure of the police investigation into the incident. The inquest disclosed that she had been sexually assaulted and raped by a former colleague while serving as an apprentice at BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.
Although a suspect was arrested and later released on bail, no charges were filed due to insufficient evidence. BAE Systems stated they have stringent safeguarding measures in place to protect apprentices.
Speaking at the inquest, Lauren’s sister, Bethany Hewson, condemned the perceived injustice, emphasizing the employer’s failure to safeguard a vulnerable individual. She highlighted the significant behavioral changes Lauren exhibited after the traumatic incidents.
Despite seeking help and notifying the authorities about the abuse, Lauren’s mental health deteriorated rapidly, leading to her suicide attempt on her birthday and subsequent tragic death in August 2025. The coroner ruled her death as intentional suicide.
The family asserted that had proper support been provided in the workplace, Lauren might have felt empowered to speak up about her ordeal. They criticized BAE Systems for allegedly neglecting their duty to ensure a safe environment for their employees.
In response to the inquest, a spokesperson from BAE Systems extended condolences to Lauren’s family, emphasizing their commitment to colleague safety and well-being. They assured ongoing review and enhancement of safeguarding protocols to align with industry standards.
Cumbria Police also issued a statement, confirming the arrest of a suspect in connection with the allegations but revealing that the investigation did not meet the threshold for criminal charges.
