“Britons Warned of Summer Travel Disruptions Amid Aviation Fuel Crisis”

Britons gearing up for their summer vacations are being advised to be cautious as they plan their trips amidst rising concerns in the aviation industry. The cost of jet fuel has surged by 120% since the onset of the conflict in the Middle East, leading to fears of potential shortages in the near future. Airlines have already raised ticket prices in response, with further disruptions anticipated unless the Strait of Hormuz reopens promptly.

Prior to the conflict, Europe had approximately 37 days’ worth of fuel supply, which may have dwindled to around 30 days now. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has issued a warning that if the supply drops to 23 days, some airports could run out of fuel.

In light of recent permissions allowing airlines to merge or cancel flights on short notice, concerns have been raised about the impact on passengers with special needs. The European Commission’s classification of the ongoing fuel crisis as “exceptional circumstances” could potentially inhibit passengers from claiming compensation for flight changes.

Travel expert Declan Somers, CEO of Mobal, highlights a significant risk this summer – potential disarray at airports and the possibility of passengers being separated on replacement flights due to fuel-saving measures.

Notably, there is no UK law mandating children to be seated with their parents during flights. While airlines are encouraged to follow guidelines set by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to seat young children near accompanying adults, there is no absolute guarantee. It is advised for parents to secure seat assignments directly from the airline and make necessary arrangements for assistance in advance.

The situation is particularly precarious for passengers with disabilities or specific medical requirements. Emergency flight changes may overlook specialized needs such as extra legroom or designated seating for medical equipment, leading to potential inconveniences for affected travelers.

Smaller regional airports are expected to bear the brunt of the fuel supply disruptions, prompting advice for families and disabled passengers to factor in extra time and precautions when planning their journeys.

Experts recommend opting for early flights from larger airports, ensuring ample medication supplies beforehand, and keeping abreast of updates from airlines and authorities. While UK airlines assert they are currently unaffected by supply issues, preparations are being made to address any potential challenges that may arise.

Leading budget airlines in Europe, including Jet2, easyJet, and TUI, have committed to maintaining regular flight operations during the peak holiday season without imposing additional charges on passengers due to fuel price hikes.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander assures that measures are being taken to provide long-term stability for families and passengers amid the evolving situation in the Middle East. Airlines are being equipped to adjust flight schedules if necessary to minimize disruptions and safeguard passengers’ interests.

Several airlines, including British Airways, Tui, Virgin Atlantic, and Ryanair, have outlined their seating policies for families with children to ensure they are seated together whenever possible. While last-minute seat assignments may vary, airlines strive to accommodate families and minors under 12 on the same booking.

The aviation industry remains optimistic about maintaining smooth operations throughout the upcoming holiday season, reassuring travelers of their commitment to providing uninterrupted services.
