A significant development has unfolded after two children were tragically discovered unresponsive in a car, allegedly forgotten by their mother during the intense 40C heatwave in Europe. The incident took place in the Bois de l’Ubac neighborhood of Carpentras, France, where the children, aged two and four, were found in the family car parked in a garage at a detached property.

Despite efforts to resuscitate them by emergency responders, both children succumbed to the extreme heat, leading to the initiation of a manslaughter investigation. An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was dehydration, as stated by Hélène Mourges, the public prosecutor.

Preliminary findings suggest that the children may have entered the car without their mother’s knowledge and became trapped inside. The mother reportedly admitted to “forgetting her children” while out shopping, although she has provided conflicting accounts according to sources close to the investigation.

Neighbors, like Amandine, expressed shock over the tragedy, highlighting the vibrant nature of the children who were well-known in the community for their playful demeanor. The incident was reported to the police by the children’s grandmother at 1:10 pm on Monday.

The ongoing heatwave in France has led to soaring temperatures, with Meteo France issuing red heatwave alerts for numerous regions, impacting daily life and public events. The scorching conditions are expected to persist throughout the week, maintaining temperatures above 40C in many areas.

Amid the challenging weather conditions, concerns over heat-related incidents have risen, including reports of drowning deaths and the strain on public services, as many areas lack widespread air-conditioning. Meteo France warned of continued oppressive heat across the country, emphasizing the need for precautions to mitigate the impacts of the prolonged heatwave.
