Tragedy struck Garden Hill Anisininew Nation in eastern Manitoba as two brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned, according to RCMP reports. The incident occurred on Wednesday when the toddlers were found in a nearby lake by a family member and subsequently taken to the nursing station by First Nation safety officers.
Despite efforts to save them, the young boys were pronounced dead at the nursing station. Police investigations suggest that the children wandered away from their home and ended up in the lake, ruling out any foul play.
The community, including Anisininew Okimawin Grand Chief Alex McDougall, is offering support to the grieving family. McDougall mentioned that measures had been taken, such as building a fence, to prevent such accidents. The distance from Winnipeg to Garden Hill is approximately 475 kilometers.
The tragic incident adds to the rising number of drowning deaths in Manitoba in 2026, as confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito expressed condolences and assured that RCMP would provide necessary assistance to the family during this difficult time, acknowledging the profound impact of such events on families and communities.
