A tragic incident occurred at a private school in Prudentopolis, Brazil’s Parana region, where a 3-year-old girl named Sofia Aparecida Iaciuk lost her life after a dislodged goalpost fell on her while she was playing underneath it. The accident led to immediate cardiac arrest, and despite efforts from paramedics who tried to resuscitate her for about an hour, Sofia succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities reported that the incident happened while children were playing on a court at the school. Following the tragic event, forensic officers and police launched an investigation at the scene to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Expressing their condolences, the local government of Prudentopolis shared a heartfelt message on Facebook, paying tribute to Sofia and offering support to her family during this difficult time. The school also mourned the loss of their student, emphasizing their prayers for comfort for all affected by Sofia’s passing.
In response to the incident, the State Department of Education emphasized the importance of securing sports equipment on school premises to prevent similar accidents. They highlighted the necessity of adhering to safety standards and conducting regular maintenance and inspections of equipment to ensure structural integrity.
As a result of Sofia’s untimely death, the Parana School Games finals have been postponed by the Department of Sports and Recreation. The finals are now rescheduled to take place at a later date. Sofia’s funeral is set to be held at the Sao Jose Chapel as family and community members mourn the loss of the young girl.
