The Toronto Tempo, a team in the WNBA, introduced their long-awaited mascots during a recent game, but they have not been met with overwhelming enthusiasm from fans.
Dez, the snapping turtle, and Dot, the Arctic hare, symbolize different paces, drawing inspiration from Aesop’s fable about their race. Despite their contrasting characteristics, they both represent the sole WNBA team in Canada. Each mascot has a unique backstory: Dez, hailing from Muskoka, is composed and enjoys music, soft-shell tacos, and is a Taurus. On the other hand, Dot, named after Toronto’s moniker T-Dot, is energetic, fond of cotton candy, the Netflix series “Drive to Survive,” and is a Gemini. Their paths crossed when Dot followed the northern lights to Dez’s habitat, realizing their perfect match.
According to the Tempo, the duo bonded over a mutual love for rhythm, despite their differing approaches, leading them to Toronto. However, their reception in the city has been mixed, with some fans criticizing their design and likening them to characters from a children’s book.
Whitney Bell, the Tempo’s chief marketing officer, emphasized the mascots’ Canadian identity as a crucial aspect. While some critics argue that they do not adequately represent Toronto, suggesting a beaver or raccoon would have been more fitting choices.
The franchise, currently struggling in their inaugural season with a 10–25 record and a 12-game losing streak, faces tough competition. The recent defeat against the Washington Mystics dashed their playoff hopes.
Despite the varied reactions, some fans appreciate the symbolism behind the tortoise and hare mascots, while speculation about their relationship status continues. TSN Toronto Tempo beat reporter Chelsea Leite clarified that Dez and Dot are simply best friends, dispelling rumors of them being siblings or romantically involved.
