A contestant on the BBC quiz show “Only Connect” once casually mentioned participating in an international whistling contest, sparking Ben Shannon’s curiosity. This led him to sign up himself and his daughter Sumire for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list. Initially, Shannon viewed it as a lighthearted activity but soon realized it was a serious competition.

Both Shannon and Sumire excelled at whistling, a skill passed down from Shannon’s parents. When audition tapes were accepted by the Masters of Musical Whistling, Shannon saw it as a fun opportunity to bond with his daughter. However, he was taken aback upon discovering the contest was held in person in Los Angeles, requiring serious preparation.

Under the guidance of Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva, Shannon and Sumire underwent rigorous training to hone their skills for the competition. Despite initial doubts, they committed to practicing daily and received confirmation that they had made the cut for the event.

The competition in Hollywood was a surreal experience for Shannon and Sumire as they met talented whistlers from around the world. Witnessing the dedication and passion of the contestants, Shannon felt his ironic facade melting away. Ultimately, both Shannon and Sumire performed admirably on stage, with Sumire winning silver in the kid’s category and Shannon securing gold in the level one adults category.

Reflecting on the experience, Shannon acknowledged the significance of caring deeply about something and embracing vulnerability. Winning at the competition reinforced the importance of not shying away from genuine passion, even if it may seem silly to others. The journey to the Masters of Musical Whistling helped Shannon rediscover the value of earnestly pursuing what truly matters.
