Peter Sichel’s life was truly extraordinary, encompassing roles as a vintner, prisoner, soldier, and spy before his passing at the age of 102. Fleeing the Nazis, serving in the army, working as a CIA operative, and popularizing Blue Nun’s Liebfraumilch, his remarkable journey has now been adapted into a movie titled The Last Spy.

Bettina, his daughter and a wine merchant, described her father as adept at keeping secrets and engaging people in conversation with his charming demeanor. The Last Spy, a film by filmmaker Katharina Otto-Bernstein, premiered at the UK Jewish Film Festival and is set for release in selected theaters.

Born into a prominent family in Mainz, Germany, Peter had a background in the wine business, with his family owning the renowned H. Sichel Söhne winery. Despite his affluent upbringing, the rise of the Nazis forced the family to flee to Bordeaux, where they faced internment during World War II.

Following his escape to the United States, Peter joined the military and later became involved with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the CIA. His covert operations during the war and post-war era were instrumental in shaping intelligence activities in Europe and Asia.

Peter’s tenure at the CIA included significant roles in countering communist threats and espionage operations. Despite his success as a spy, he eventually left the agency due to concerns about its culture. Transitioning back to the wine industry, he played a pivotal role in promoting Blue Nun and expanding its global presence.

Throughout his life, Peter juggled the demands of espionage with personal challenges, including the loss of his daughter to cancer. Despite the hardships, he remained dedicated to his work and continued to support causes close to his heart, such as his alma mater, Stowe.

While his legacy in the wine world endures, Peter believed that the allure of espionage would always captivate people’s curiosity. His story, as depicted in The Last Spy, serves as a testament to a life filled with intrigue, adventure, and resilience.
