Ask individuals about the current meaning of being English, and the responses may vary. Some may shrug or engage in debates. Despite many individuals taking pride in their English heritage, there is a reluctance to discuss it due to recent attempts by prominent bigots to manipulate this shared identity to target those with different skin colors or faiths.

While this is not a new phenomenon, as evidenced by past actions of groups like the National Front, it remains a significant issue. By staying silent, there is a risk of allowing a minority to shape our national identity negatively. Fortunately, the racists and bigots represent a small fraction of society. The majority of people view skin color and religion as inconsequential to Englishness, emphasizing the importance of belonging, mutual commitment, and shared values.

Today marks Saint George’s Day, offering an opportunity for the silent majority to speak up. It is a chance to assert that the English flag should unite rather than divide us. Englishness holds different meanings for different individuals, and that diversity is embraced. Celebrations for Saint George’s Day include the launch of a new collection of objects symbolizing Englishness, showcasing the breadth of interpretations.

The essence of being English lies in caring for fellow citizens, fostering a sense of belonging, and upholding shared values like fairness, decency, and camaraderie. This inclusive spirit is exemplified by various community initiatives on Saint George’s Day, such as joint events between churches and mosques and collaborative efforts by schoolchildren and faith leaders.

As the upcoming World Cup approaches, unity becomes even more critical. The diversity within the English team reflects modern society, highlighting different backgrounds and skin colors united under one mission. It is essential for the public to rally behind the team, demonstrating unwavering support across stadiums, local pubs, and living rooms. This collective backing signifies pride in contemporary English identity, emphasizing unity over prejudice.

It is time for more individuals to showcase the true essence of a united England, transcending imagined pasts and embracing the present reality. A nation united in pride, not prejudice, is the ultimate goal for an England that stands together.
