A well-known bridge in Texas, often referred to as the “scariest” in the southern US, recently reopened after undergoing significant maintenance. The Rainbow Bridge, spanning the Neches River and connecting Port Arthur to Bridge City, features a striking design with a steep gradient and high arch to accommodate local shipping needs.

To address potential safety concerns, the bridge was built with a vertical clearance of 177 feet, making it a visually captivating route between Jefferson and Orange counties. Since 1997, the bridge has only allowed westbound traffic flow.

In March 2025, the Rainbow Bridge was closed for extensive repairs, including a full-depth concrete deck restoration, steel railing repairs, and replacement of rivets and steel member pins. The restoration work, costing $10.9 million, was carried out by Southern Road and Bridge, a Florida-based contractor.

During the closure, drivers had to reroute through the adjacent Veterans Memorial Bridge, which was temporarily adjusted to accommodate the redirected traffic flow. Following the completion of the restoration work and a thorough inspection, the Rainbow Bridge reopened to motorists on April 11, restoring a vital transportation link.

Originally built in 1936 and taking two years to finish, Rainbow Bridge is often featured in lists of unique and awe-inspiring bridges worldwide.
