Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated an inquiry into the potential use of harmful chemicals in the production of children’s underwear by Fruit of the Loom and Hanes. Paxton issued civil investigative demands to the companies, expressing concerns about the chemicals’ impact on children’s well-being without making any accusations of misconduct.
While Fruit of the Loom and Berkshire Hathaway have not responded to Reuters’ requests for comment, Gildan, the parent company of Hanes, has stated its willingness to cooperate with the investigation. Gildan emphasized its adherence to stringent manufacturing and sourcing standards to meet industry guidelines regarding harmful substances, affirming its commitment to delivering safe and high-quality products.
Paxton highlighted the industry trend of using synthetic materials like polyester, rayon, and spandex to cater to consumer demand for affordable items. He underscored the potential risks associated with synthetic fabrics shedding microplastics and the presence of harmful chemicals such as bisphenols, fluorine, parabens, phthalates, and “forever chemicals,” known as PFAS, in textile manufacturing, which have been linked to health issues like cancer, hormone disruption, and infertility.
The attorney general stressed the importance of safeguarding children from potential harm caused by toxic chemicals in everyday products. This investigation follows a similar probe launched by Paxton in April regarding the presence of “forever chemicals” in Lululemon Athletica activewear.
Paxton, a Republican candidate for a U.S. Senate seat, is currently trailing in polls against Democrat James Talarico in what is considered one of the closely watched races in the upcoming Nov. 3 midterm elections.
