The Winter Olympics kick off with a grand ceremony at Milan’s renowned San Siro Stadium, featuring performances by Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli. A talented young British team is expected to shine, with UK Sport forecasting a potential medal haul of up to eight in Italy.
Scattered across northern Italy, the 25th winter games will be celebrated with various events in Predazzo, Livigno, and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Team GB is anticipated to achieve its best-ever medal count, aiming to surpass the record of five medals set in Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018. Ice skating duo Lewis Gibson and Lilah Fear, likened to the legendary Torvill and Dean, are eyeing the chance to secure Britain’s first Olympic figure skating medal since 1994. Lilah Fear, 26, will lead the team as the flagbearer during the opening ceremony alongside bobsleigh pilot Brad Hall, 35.
Britain’s curling team is set to build on their success from 2022, where the women claimed gold. World champion Matt Weston and his close friend Marcus Wyatt are standout performers in skeleton racing.
Notable medal contenders include Mia Brookes, Kirsty Muir – the youngest athlete at Beijing 2022 at just 17 – Zoe Atkin, and Charlotte Bankes, all vying for the nation’s first Olympic gold or silver in snow events.
The competition, running until Feb 22 and broadcasted on the BBC, will see nearly 3,000 athletes from 90 countries competing for 116 medals at Milan-Cortina. Team GB’s 53 athletes are already in action, with high hopes for Wyatt to join Weston on the men’s skeleton podium.
In various events, British athletes like Weston, Zoe Atkin, Charlotte Bankes, Mia Brookes, Kirsty Muir, Lilah Fear, and Lewis Gibson are poised to showcase their skills and vie for top honors. Each competitor brings a unique talent and a strong chance for success at the Winter Olympics.
