During his testimony in court, a teacher facing charges of murdering an adopted infant adamantly denied causing any harm or sexual abuse to the child.

Jamie Varley, 37, expressed strong emotions while refuting the allegations of killing 13-month-old Preston Davey. He admitted to taking photos on his phone but denied any intention of using them as “trophies” related to sexual abuse, although he acknowledged feeling regret and shame about some images.

Varley, along with his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, is accused of subjecting the adopted child to ongoing sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, as stated in the trial at Preston Crown Court. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In the trial’s fourth week, Varley took the stand to present his defense for the first time, visibly affected by the images and videos of the infant displayed in the courtroom.

Under questioning from Nick Johnson KC, Varley denied causing any harm to Preston, emphasizing that the child was never subjected to sexual abuse or intentional physical or psychological harm.

Varley shared his journey from being a teacher to adopting Preston with McGowan-Fazakerley, highlighting the challenges of transitioning into parenthood and expressing his affection for the child, surpassing even the love he had for his dog.

Regarding specific incidents and evidence presented in court, Varley refuted claims of deliberate harm or inappropriate actions towards Preston, explaining his perspective and intentions behind certain photographs and scenarios.

The trial revealed the tragic circumstances leading to Preston’s hospitalization and subsequent death, with Varley denying any involvement in causing the child’s fatal injuries.

Varley’s testimony and defense strategy aimed to refute the allegations and provide explanations for the events leading to Preston’s untimely demise, as the trial proceedings continue.
