A series of recent studies suggest that ice-hardened freighters can safely navigate Hudson Bay beyond the traditional four-month Port of Churchill shipping season. The studies indicate that although there are challenges posed by ice even under pessimistic global warming scenarios, it may be possible to extend the shipping season.
The research, aimed at exploring the feasibility of prolonging the Port of Churchill’s shipping season, highlights that ice conditions in Hudson Bay will continue to present uncertainties from year to year. Factors such as ice thickness and vessel requirements will play a crucial role in determining the feasibility of extended shipping.
One of the studies raises concerns about the ability of ice-hardened vessels carrying full loads of liquid natural gas to navigate the mouth of the Churchill River effectively. These findings aim to provide Manitoba’s government with valuable insights as it seeks to attract investors for a major proposal to expand the Port of Churchill and upgrade the Hudson Bay Railway.
Arctic Gateway Group, in collaboration with shipping company Fednav, conducted the research to explore the prerequisites for enabling year-round shipping operations at the Port of Churchill. The study suggests that utilizing ice-hardened freighters could facilitate both an extension of the current shipping season and the potential for year-round access in the future.
While Fednav acknowledges the feasibility of extending the shipping season, they caution that challenges posed by the dynamic ice environment of Hudson Bay and the complexities of navigating the shallow and narrow approach to the Port of Churchill must be addressed. The report suggests that further field studies, probe voyages, and simulation-based assessments are necessary to reduce uncertainties and make informed decisions about extended-season or year-round shipping operations.
Estimates from the Arctic Research Foundation indicate that the cost of acquiring ice-hardened vessels suitable for Hudson Bay ranges from $100 million to $410 million, significantly less than the expense of icebreakers designed for traversing thick multi-year Arctic Ocean ice. However, infrastructure modifications, including dredging and the development of an offshore loading facility, would be necessary to accommodate these vessels at Churchill.
A separate study led by a group of academics, including University of Manitoba sea ice expert Feiyue Wang, predicts that even with a five-degree Celsius rise in the average global temperature above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century, ice will still be present in Hudson Bay. This forecast contrasts with current expectations from atmospheric scientists, who project a 3.4-degree Celsius increase in global temperature within the same timeframe.
