A recent study suggests that rapid weight loss may be more effective than gradual weight loss. Researchers have discovered that individuals who shed pounds quickly tend to achieve greater weight loss compared to those who lose weight slowly. Additionally, they are more likely to maintain the weight loss over the course of a year.

The study, presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Turkey, analyzed the effects of a rapid weight loss program versus a gradual weight loss program. Researchers from Norway examined data from 284 obese adults who were divided into both programs.

During the 16-week rapid weight loss program, participants were restricted to 1,000 calories per day for the first eight weeks, 1,300 calories per day for weeks nine to 12, and 1,500 calories per day for weeks 13 to 16. In contrast, the gradual weight loss group was advised to reduce their daily calorie intake by 1,000 calories, with reported consumption averaging around 1,400 calories per day.

The research team observed that individuals in the rapid weight loss group experienced a significantly higher percentage of total body weight loss compared to those in the gradual weight loss group. After one year, the rapid weight loss group had lost 14.4% of their body weight, while the gradual weight loss group had lost 10.5%.

Lead author Dr. Line Kristin Johnson from Vestfold Hospital Trust in Norway emphasized that rapid weight loss, when conducted in a controlled and professionally supervised manner, could be more effective than gradual weight loss for achieving weight loss goals and reducing the risks associated with obesity-related health issues.

Dr. Marie Spreckley, research program manager at the University of Cambridge, highlighted the significance of the study in challenging the common belief that gradual weight loss is superior for long-term results. The findings contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of safe and structured rapid weight loss programs as a viable strategy for managing obesity.
