Prostate cancer is a prevalent issue in the UK, with over 64,000 men diagnosed annually. However, the debate continues on the reliability of the PSA test, which can lead to overdiagnosis. The test’s accuracy is questioned as it may not always detect cancer in individuals with elevated PSA levels, while some with normal levels may have the disease.
Screening can also identify harmless tumors, prompting unnecessary treatments with associated risks like incontinence and erectile dysfunction. A recent Cochrane review examined six trials involving 789,086 patients, showing that screening reduced prostate cancer deaths from 16 to 14 per 1,000 men. This contrasts with a previous review concluding no significant reduction in deaths.
While the trials did not evaluate quality of life impacts, Dr. Juan Franco emphasized the imperfections of the PSA test and varying types of prostate cancer. He stressed the importance of informed decision-making between patients and doctors to weigh the benefits and risks of screening.
