A recent study conducted by King’s College London has shown that children facing isolation during their early secondary school years or being left out of team activities are more likely to become Neets by the age of 18. The research revealed that 12-year-olds who experienced high levels of isolation were over twice as likely to end up as Neets later on.
The study emphasized that children who felt lonely and isolated at the age of 12 tended to remain in the same state of isolation by the time they reached 18. Social isolation in this context was defined as a lack of positive social relationships or having limited social networks with few interactions.
This discovery follows a previous report by Alan Milburn, a former Labour Cabinet minister, which warned of significant economic repercussions if action is not taken to address the issue. Andy Burnham, the new Prime Minister, has pledged to combat the Neet crisis and recently introduced new technical education pathways for 14-year-olds to tackle the problem.
Researchers involved in the study highlighted that addressing social isolation during early adolescence could not only benefit young individuals but also lead to broader economic advantages by enhancing productivity. Dr. Bridget Bryan, the lead author of the study, emphasized the long-term impact of social isolation on young people’s employment prospects, underscoring the importance of addressing childhood isolation to improve life chances and job opportunities.
Dr. Timothy Matthews, a co-author and psychology lecturer at the University of Greenwich, noted that loneliness and isolation can create a self-perpetuating cycle, making it challenging for isolated individuals to reconnect with others. This suggests the need for targeted interventions to break the cycle of loneliness and enhance social connections for vulnerable youth.
