The leader of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust has emphasized that women are still facing a significant level of danger similar to that of 1986 when Suzy Lamplugh was tragically killed. Following Suzy’s disappearance, her mother, Diana, dedicated herself to establishing the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to promote personal safety awareness. Despite their efforts, Diana and her husband Paul, both OBE recipients, passed away without closure on Suzy’s case.
On the 40th anniversary of Suzy’s disappearance, the Interim CEO of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, Emma Lingley-Clark, expressed disappointment that four decades later, the organization continues to advocate and assist victims, indicating a persistent need for their work.
The trust focuses on supporting stalking victims through initiatives like the National Stalking Helpline, campaigning against public sexual harassment, advocating for safety standards in transportation services, and providing safety training for employees.
Detective Chief Inspector Teresa Foster of the Metropolitan Police’s cold case homicide unit suspects that Suzy may have been stalked due to being placed in a visible position at work to attract customers. She believes a stalker may have taken advantage of this visibility to lure Suzy into a dangerous situation.
Stalking affects around 1.5 million individuals in the UK, with a noticeable rise in cases linked to domestic abuse. Interestingly, nearly 40% of stalking incidents reported to the helpline are not perpetrated by partners or ex-partners but by acquaintances or strangers.
The Suzy Lamplugh Trust aims to ensure that all stalking victims are taken seriously when they seek help. They advocate for specialized support for victims, emphasizing the need for a better understanding of stalking dynamics and the serious impact it has on individuals.
