Wes Streeting has emphasized that his decision to take on the role of Defence Secretary was contingent on being convinced by Andy Burnham that substantial investments were forthcoming.

Streeting highlighted the advantage of having his predecessor, John Healey, now leading the Treasury. Healey faces the task of allocating significant funds in his initial Budget to finance the government’s defense strategies.

Speaking to Sky News, Streeting expressed his confidence in the Prime Minister and Chancellor’s commitment to adequately funding defense, ensuring national security, and meeting international obligations. He stated that without this assurance, he would not have accepted the position.

Addressing the upcoming challenges, Streeting noted that the Prime Minister is prepared to tackle complex issues head-on rather than avoiding them.

One of the key challenges ahead is defense expenditure. Healey, who departed the government in June, stressed the importance of prioritizing defense spending to safeguard the country and its citizens.

The government faces mounting pressure to increase defense spending to 3% of national income, although a clear timeline for this adjustment is yet to be established.

Healey underscored that defense spending is a top priority, emphasizing the government’s duty to ensure national security. Currently, the UK’s defense budget is projected to reach 2.7% of GDP by 2029.

Despite the absence of a definitive plan to reach the 3% target, Healey expressed disappointment upon resigning as Defence Secretary. Keir Starmer had previously indicated that the figure could rise further to 3.5% by 2035.

The new Defense Secretary has not outlined his defense spending strategy yet. However, the government’s official spokesperson stated that existing defense commitments to international partners would be honored, with further details to be disclosed in due course.

In his upcoming Budget, Healey will need to secure an additional £4.7 billion to fund the government’s Defense Investment Plan (DIP) released on June 30. This financial requirement necessitates careful budgeting over the summer to identify savings or potential tax increases.
