Keir Starmer reaffirmed his stance on the Iran conflict despite renewed criticism from Donald Trump. The UK Prime Minister stood firm against pressure from the US President, emphasizing that the UK’s decision to abstain from involvement in the conflict would not change.

Trump’s ongoing disapproval of the UK stems from Starmer’s refusal to support US/Israeli military actions in the Middle East. In response to Trump’s recent comments criticizing the US-UK relationship, Starmer reiterated his commitment to maintaining a neutral position in the Iran conflict.

During a session of PMQs, Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey raised concerns about Trump’s threats regarding a trade deal with the UK. Davey suggested canceling King Charles’s upcoming state visit to the US in light of Trump’s behavior, expressing worries about potential diplomatic implications.

In his response, Starmer emphasized that the UK’s position on the Iran conflict was unwavering and in the national interest. He stated that the UK would not be swayed by external pressures to change course, highlighting the importance of maintaining neutrality in the conflict.

Regarding the King’s visit to the US, Starmer highlighted the historical significance of the visit in commemorating the longstanding relationship between the two countries, emphasizing that the visit transcended individual political dynamics.

In an interview with Sky News, Trump expressed mixed feelings about the UK, pointing out areas of disagreement such as energy and immigration policies. Despite his criticisms, Trump acknowledged his liking for Starmer but raised concerns about the UK’s decision to close North Sea oil, impacting energy prices.

Trump’s comments on the US-UK relationship indicated a level of disappointment, with implications for potential changes to trade deals. However, he clarified that the strained relationship would not overshadow the upcoming royal visit, emphasizing his personal relationship with the King and downplaying any diplomatic tensions.
